Epson ET-8500 Specifications
The Epson ET-8500 looks excellent. The latest iteration of the ET series of inkjets moves away from the utilitarian look of the earlier models and has a design that would fit right into any creative workspace. This printer wins plaudits because of the fine details. The 4.3-inch color touchscreen — while not high-tech — is excellent and user-friendly. And you can’t go past the front SD card slot and USB port.
The ET-8500 is excellent where it counts. Color accuracy and detail reproduction in printed photos are exceptional. In contrast, Epson’s six-color Claria ET Premium ink system, including gray and photo black inks, goes a long way, making outstanding sharp black-and-white photos — something more than a few monochrome photography buffs will appreciate. Print speed is decent for a photo printer at its price, with 4 x 6-inch photos in well under a minute and A4 prints in a couple of minutes. Adding EcoTank technology is a big plus, doing away with cartridges and allowing you to fill up the ink from bottles. ET-8500 reduces cost per print and is a step in the right direction for the environment-conscious.
Despite these strengths, the printer does have some limitations. First, the initial cost is high enough to scare off some buyers, though the long-term ink savings often balance that out. Additionally, even with Wi-Fi Direct and Apple AirPrint support, it doesn’t have fax capabilities, which would have made it even more attractive for many home-office environments. Even given those minor considerations, the Epson EcoTank ET-8500 AIO’s print quality, ease of use, and very competitive cost of operation make it a strong contender in this class and category. It delivers substantial bang for the buck, especially for those heavily emphasizing photographic and creative tasks.
