Epson EcoTank ET-2714 Specifications

The inkjet printer market is crowded, so the Epson EcoTank ET-2714 has undoubtedly set itself a challenge as it aims to be cheap, eco-friendly, and reduce ink costs. It’s one of the cartridge-free models from Epson’s popular EcoTank series, which uses ultra-high-capacity ink tanks to reduce ink costs.

At first glance, the ET-2714 has an almost identical design to other printers in Epson’s EcoTank range. There’s an excellent reason for that. Despite the tank system, the printer is surprisingly compact, making it perfect for home offices or small businesses where desk space is at a premium. Setting up the ET-2714 takes seconds, and topping up the ink is easy thanks to Epson’s spill-free refill system. The inclusion of Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct – along with Epson’s free apps for iOS and Android – supporting a wide range of wireless printing makes it a doddle to print from any device.

Elsewhere, the ET-2714 performs well. Printed text documents are exceptional for an inkjet at this price point; black text is pronounced, well-defined, and suitable for most home or small office tasks. Color is also commendably accurate on plain paper. While it won’t be troubling for specialist photo printers, results are more than satisfactory for the occasional report, graph containing color, or image printout. Print speeds are good, too; not the fastest we’ve seen, but consistent with the focus on economy rather than speed. It’s in contrast to savings that the ET-2714 comes into its own; the low cost-per-page of the EcoTank system is a defining asset, and I imagine it will lead to substantial savings over the lifetime of a printer.

There are limitations, though. Without an automatic document feeder, ethernet connectivity, or duplex printing, it will undoubtedly rule it out for many. The most significant barrier, of course, is that initial investment — it’s considerably higher than you’d pay for the type of printer that uses cheaper cartridges over time. However, for those planning to keep the ET-2714 for the long haul, this is one of those rare occasions where we could recommend it as an excellent investment, not just clever marketing. In short, this is a cheap-to-run workhorse, offering decent print quality but with a few compromises on features and initial outlay.
