Epson Stylus Photo R220 Specifications
The Epson Stylus Photo R220, an inexpensive 6-color photo printer, is a highly flexible photo printer for the home user. This printer does a decent job printing photos and can print directly onto a CD or DVD. Even though this printer is an older model, it is still a favorite for those who need a dedicated photo printer without the latest bells and whistles. As for the print quality, aside from its lovely palette of photo inks, the printer has a six-color ink system, which includes light cyan and light magenta, giving it a broader gamut for color reproduction and subtler gradation in photos.
In performance terms, the R220 doesn’t claim the fastest print speeds and, clocked in modestly compared to more current alternatives, there’s little doubt that it wasn’t built for speed. Its proper focus is simply on the print quality, making it a good option for the user to accept a lower effective print rate for a crisper finish. The R220 doesn’t disappoint if you’re printing photos — particularly at the higher quality settings and particularly on photo paper, where results can be awe-inspiring for a printer in this class, with vibrant colors and good detail. Print on plain paper at the faster settings, and quality quite obviously drops, however, and that’s worth considering if you’re looking for a flexible approach to your print output.
For such a low asking price, it’s a wonder that Epson has packed in so many features. The R220 is a six-color photo printer that uses six individual ink cartridges – one for each color and another for black. It means less wastage of ink, as you only need to replace the color that runs out.
Naturally, the cost of genuine Epson cartridges increases over time, especially if you print many photos, so the R220 isn’t suited to high-volume printing. However, the quality is sufficient for home and semi-professional use. The ink can also dry up if the printer isn’t used regularly – a common problem with this type of inkjet technology.
The R220 isn’t suitable for time-critical printing, but the combination of quality and price means that a photo enthusiast with the proper subjects would find much to like about it. The printer is slow, printing text at only 5.8 pages per minute and a standard 4x6in photo in 3min 15secs. It doesn’t have any card slots, which is a pity, as they make it much easier to print digital images. The cheapest compact cameras are coming out with extra pixels, so they need a high-quality printer such as this to make the most of them. Casual users, then, will be the core market of the R220.
