Epson Perfection V500 Photo Review

“When we launched our Perfection V700 and Perfection V750 products, they set new benchmarks for professional quality scanning, and we’re excited for the Perfection V500 Photo to do the same for photo enthusiasts and professionals who want to make the most of their past and present originals.” — Philip Amato, product manager for Epson America, Inc.

Epson’s Professional Media tech sheets contain all the details. Here are the basics: The very first feature Amato mentioned is the 6400 dpi resolution; the following immediate reaction is to the Perfection V500’s built-in transparency unit (for incredible scans of slides, negatives, and medium format film); and finally, there’s the Digital ICE technology, which will blow away anyone who grew up with film cameras and inherited piles of scratched up, dust-ridden slides and film from parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents. And if that’s not enough, Amato also mentioned that the scanner’s software automatically removes any imperfections before making the final scan.

The high point of the V500 Photo is the user experience. The scanner comes equipped with Easy Photo Fix technology by Epson, enabling users to quickly restore faded color photos to their original brilliance with the click of a button. In addition, the V500 Photo is energy efficient. It uses a white LED light, so it requires no warm-up time. It enables the scanner to start the scanning process immediately upon powering on. Add in a software package that includes Epson Scan with Epson Easy Photo Fix, Adobe Photoshop Elements, and ABBYY FineReader Sprint OCR, and users, whether they are amateur photographers or graphic designers, can optimize their digitization efforts with relative ease.

The V500 Photo could be better. The speed won’t precisely overwhelm you — it’s not difficult to zone out as the scanner runs through photos, particularly at its maximum resolution. Also, if you’re used to some competitors’ intuitive, super simple interfaces and software, you may find the Epson’s a little clunky. It sometimes takes some digging to determine where options are, and the compatibility chart isn’t always accurate. The scan quality on documents is good, and they’re certainly legible, but you won’t feel the need to frame your scanned tax returns.

That said, the V500 Photo strikes an appealing balance for high-quality photo scanning, particularly at the sub-$200 price point. While its plain-paper scan quality is acceptable, its photo and transparency scans are top-notch in their price range if they could be more impressive. With its relatively low price and excellent image quality, the V500 Photo is a terrific tool for photographers looking to get their work from print to digital without losing the level of detail they put into their prints.
