Epson Expression Premium XP-540 Specifications

The Epson Expression Premium XP-540 is a mid-range all-in-one aimed at the home user interested in printing everything from photos to homework. It’s a small and neat printer, complete with a flatbed scanner on top, but without an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), it’s OK for scanning the odd sheet. Behind the printer, hinges reveal a feed tray, which takes up to 50 sheets – not enough for a business machine, but sufficient for most homes.

The XP-540 is a neat and economical little printer. It does everything it claims to, and print quality is acceptable for text and graphics, though it’s slightly slower than Epson’s claimed speeds. Photos are good quality at speed. Drops of ink are nicely disguised in the output, providing excellent detail in darker and brightly lit areas. The control panel folds down and clicks into its diagonal position. And that’s so you can feed in the CD/DVD carrier, which is included in the price. This extra is only found in some printers and is a valuable addition for photo enthusiasts.
The Epson Expression Premium XP-540 is an entry-level all-in-one device designed to look good and almost does. It has the odd cutaway and a somewhat inset paper-out tray, but its items are integrated in other respects. Opening it for work shows a particular economy, however.

The Epson Expression Premium XP-540 uses Epson’s 33 series and four inks. As is typical, there are two black cartridges to make text and photo prints economical. In practice, you should be able to cover black and color prints for under 10p, closer to 7p, but only if you shop around for paper, so be sure to do so.

Where the XP-540 excels is in its photo-printing skills. A five-ink system allows the printer to produce images with vibrant, rich colors and plenty of detail that are impressively sharp for a printer in this class. The colors are nicely saturated, with smooth gradations that will keep photography enthusiasts happy if they want to print their work at home. It’s aided by a dedicated photo black ink that allows the printer to produce better contrast and depth in images. Text documents are produced quite crisply and clearly, and while it’s not the fastest at churning out pages, the speed is suitably balanced against the high output quality.

The cost of the Epson XP-540 might give some potential buyers pause. While the initial purchase costs are affordable, the individually replaceable cartridges could add up over time, especially if you frequently print photos. Wireless connectivity is standard, including Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, and mobile printing options such as Epson Connect, meaning you’ll be able to print from various devices with minimal fuss. But with the ink this printer uses while printing, you might be considering the cost more than you’d like to.

And knowing all this, how does the XP-540 stack up? As a home printer designed for people primarily interested in photo printing, the Epson Expression Premium XP-540 performs solidly. It’s neither the fastest nor the most economical for high-volume printing. For output and ease of use, though, it stands well among competitors in the mid-range printer space, and by any measure, it’s a good choice if you care more about beautiful printouts than the cost per page.
